Environment - Video: Producer Makes Effort to Help Environment
Many of us are doing what we can to help take better care of the environment. Reporter Sarah Gustin shows us how one producer...working with one program...is stopping an environmental problem before it starts. It is all about how you manage it. (Bruce Morman / Glen Ullin Producer) WITH THE EPA REGULATIONS REGARDING WATER QUALITY, OUR NUMBERS WEREN'T HIGH ENOUGH THAT WE WERE IN VIOLATION, BUT I FELT THAT IN THE FUTURE WE WOULD BE FORCED TO DO IT. The State Department of Health wants producers to keep their animal waste out of the water. And the 319 Livestock Manure Management Program is helping Bruce Morman do just that. (Bruce Morman / Glen Ullin Producer) IT HAS MADE IT ALOT EASIER TO FEED BECAUSE WE GOT THE HEAVY USE PAD, WE HAVE NEVER HAD THAT BEFORE, WE GOT THE BUNK LINE FEEDER, NEVER HAD THAT BEFORE, SO IT IS JUST, TO HAVE THE ACCESS ROAD AS HIGH AS IT IS ELEVATON...EVERYTHING IS UP TO SPEED WHERE IT SHOULD BE. Morman started his manure management project about 3 years ago. The lot isn't completely finished...but Morman and his cows are already reaping some of the benefits. (Bruce Morman / Glen Ullin Producer) WITH THE PENS SLOPED THE WAY THEY ARE, WITH CORRECT SLOPPING IT IS ALOT EAISER TO CLEAN THE PENS. IT IS JUST THEY GOT ALOT MORE SPACE WE WERE OVERCROWDED IN THE OLD FACILITIES SO IT IS OVERALL JUST MORE COMFORT FOR THE CATTLE THIS WAY. A solid waste sperator will soon be draining liquids into an evaporation pond. Allowing Morman to make better use of his natural fertilzer...and keeps standing water out of the corral. (Rachel Fast / Morton Co. Watershed Coordinator) ANOTHER PLUS WITH THIS IS WITH YOUR CROPLAND. TAKING THAT MANURE, OUT OF THE WATER SYSTEMS, PREVENTING IT FROM RUNNING OFF, PUTTING IT ON YOUR CROP LAND, YOU ARE GOING TO GET ALOT OF VALUE OUT OF THAT. And you will get a little help paying for it. The Federal government provides 60 percent cost share assistance. (Rachel Fast / Morton Co. Watershed Coordinator) I KNOW IT IS REALLY EXPENSIVE RIGHT NOW TO BE DOING THESE SORT OF OPERATIONS BUT IN THE LONG RUN THEY BENEFIT YOU SO MUCH AND IF YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE RIGHT NOW IT IS GOING TO BE ALOT BETTER THAN HAVING TO BE FORCED TO PUT IN THESE SYSTEMS YEARS DOWN THE ROAD. Near Glen Ullin, Reporting for KX News, I am Sarah Gustin. Funding is available until 2011. Any producers interested in making changes to their own operations can contact their local NRCS office.

Environment - Video: Gas Myths
High Gas Prices are creating a pinch for many people. Some people are going to desperate measures to get any help they can at the pump. Brad Feldman shows us what you need to know before you put anything in your car. (Sound -typing) One simple search. (Sound) Keyword.. Gas Saving... And you can find more than twelve hundred items that Guarantee better gas mileage. (Parrell Grossman/ ND Consumer Protection) When consumers are considering all the hype about gas savings claims and products I think consumers want to make sure they really arent purchasing pixy dust. But Parrell Grossman says all of the promises on the information super highway do not neccessarily cross over to the highway of reality. (Parrell Grossman/ ND Consumer Protection) Ocassionally consumers will use these products and endorse these with their own private testimonials and they will claim that they have gas increases. And of course it is always possible but one thing consumers need to consider when they hear claims by other consumers that they have realized gas mileage increases that none of these consumers have scientifically tested these products. As we shop online we are able to find a device that will convert our car to run on water. Another item is a magnet you attach to your fuel line. The last item we looked at are these tires. They are listed as Honda fifteen inch gas saving tire and wheel set. All of these items guarantee an increase in horse power and at least 20 miles per gallon increase in gas mileage. (Parrell Grossman/ ND Consumer Protection) When the EPA has looked at this if there are any sorts of savings they arent big increases so right away when consumers hear that this will really substantially increase their gas mileage by huge percentage they should be careful about that. Grossman says if you want to try something, you are better off going to a local business. Al Mizeur with Mizeur Car Care has been selling a product called the gas saver for the past five years. He says the product uses platinum to burn the fuel that goes through your engine and is not burned for energy. The Gas Saver company guarantees a twenty mile per gallon increase in gas mileage. Something Mizeur is willing to stand behind. (Al Mizeur/ Mizeur Car Care) I have done business on ebay and online and stuff and been ripped off and I dont like it and I dont think other people like it either. If there is a problem here I am here I am not going anywhere I am going to stand behind the product. Grossman says its a case of driver beware. Taking a gamble on a product that increases your gas mileage might just have you feeling even more of a pain than four dollar gas. Brad Feldman KX News Grossman says any product that says it is EPA tested and approved is likely fake. He says the EPA does not have lab and does not approve gas saving products.
