Hydrogen - Video: Chemist
Missouri High School Chemistry teacher Robert Becker is known as the Chemistry Demo Guru. This weekend he's in Bismarck Ryan Davidson caught up with him at Bismarck State College for one of his demonstrations. This isn't your everyday ordinary high school chemistry teacher. Robert Becker knows how to entertain with science. Robert Becker: I have a student stay after class on Tuesdays and I teach them how to do an experiment and then they demonstrate it for the class the next day. And he was heating things up at one of his demonstrations at BSC with one experiment that Ryan Davidson particularly enjoyed. It was called the Fire Tornado He brought lots of chemistry experiments with him, from the ever popular baking soda and vinegar, to some liquid nitrogen entertainment and his hydrogen demonstrations were a blast. I like the pringles rockets too. If you get two pringles rockets they will launch at the same time, so that's pretty cool. There's a lot of great stuff...oh and then the sulphur hexafluoride You might be wondering what that is...listen in as Robert explains. This is how I sound with helium remember that, helium is low density. In this bottle I have a much more dense gas. The gas is five times more dense than air. And it is called sulphur hexafluoride. And this is what I sound like with sulphur hexafluoride in my voice box. If you're interested in seeing the Guru do some experiments he'll be doing another demonstration at BSC Friday night at 7.

Hydrogen - Video: The Volt Electric Car Showcased at GM's 100th Anniversary
General Motors Looks to the Future of Transportation and the Next 100 Years Since its founding in 1908, General Motors has built over 450 million vehicles and currently manufactures cars in 35 different countries. To mark their 100th birthday, they rolled out what they are calling the "reinvention" of the automobile - the all-electric drive Chevrolet Volt. The day kicked off with a live global broadcast in Detroit, where the production model of the Chevrolet Volt was revealed. The revolutionary extended-range electric vehicle will deliver up to 40 miles per gallon of gasoline and emissions-free driving for hundreds of additional miles. The broadcast also highlighted technologies, global products, leaders and future leaders from around the world. And even Chris Paine, director of the movie, "Who Killed the Electric Car" - which was highly critical of GM's handling of its first electric vehicle prototype - was shooting his sequel, "Revenge of the Electric Car." During the last century, GM has been responsible for many innovations that have helped shape personal transportation - like the electric self-starter, the fully automatic transmission and shatter-proof safety glass. Today, they are looking to the next hundred years by leading the way in alternative fuel technology, hydrogen fuel cell development, Flex-Fuel vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Source: General Motors

Hydrogen - Video: Mileage Increase 50-100% While Going Green with Your Vehicle Today
A New System Gives Drivers More Bang for their Buck Drivers struggling with high gas prices may have another option the next time they hit the road: a new system that can turn a vehicle into a hydrogen hybrid which dramatically boosts a vehicles' gas mileage. The cars are modified with a unique fuel cell system -- a computer that communicates with the car's computer -- to harness the power of hydrogen. By using electricity from the battery, the fuel cell separates water into oxygen and hydrogen and blends the hydrogen with the fuel. This adds power to the fuel so each gallon of gas does more work and lasts longer. On a 3000 mile cross country test drive, a car equipped with the hydrogen hybrid system averaged 55 miles to the gallon. After two years of research and development, Pro Motors Group has partnered with 4 Wheel Parts to offer nationwide installation of the hydrogen hybrid system. To date, about 250 to 300 cars have been converted. Produced for Pro Motors Group Corp.

Hydrogen - Video: Designing the Car of the Future
Twenty One Students from the Most Prestigious Design Schools Around the World From as close as Detroit to as far away as China, twenty one students around the world were chosen to design and engineer a hydrogen-powered car for the year 2020 as a part of the Annual Design Internship Program, by General Motors. Each team of interns had a designer, an engineer, a sculptor, and a trim and color artist. Together, they came up with six futuristic concept cars. In addition to being gas-free, the concept cars also had to meet the needs of international drivers in the emerging markets of China, India and Russia. While these concept cars probably won't be available in showrooms anytime soon, the students have gained real world experience to help further their future careers, hopefully designing petroleum-free transportation for all of us Produced for General Motors

Hydrogen - Video: Fuel Cell Technology Takes To The Road
Largest Market Test Highlights Electric Energy As environmental awareness increases, so does the need for better fuel alternatives. One of those energy sources is getting a lot of buzz - and moving from laboratory testing to the road. Hydrogen fuel cells are electric energy sources that have the potential to power everything from cell phones to large buildings. For cars, they provide zero-emission power and don't use any oil. And although actual hydrogen fuel vehicles are a few years down the road, most major auto manufacturers have already started hydrogen programs. A new campaign, called "Project Driveway," is putting fuel cell technology to practice in the largest market test ever. As part of the project, Chevrolet is loaning 100 Equinox Fuel Cell electric vehicles to select families across the country. The pioneering drivers will give feedback on the overall operation and feeling of the car, while generating public awareness and exposure to fuel cell vehicles. Source: General Motors

Hydrogen - Video: Weather Extra - Effects of Humidity
The humidity has been high lately. But what else besides ourselves gets affected by the moisture? Ryan Davidson explains in this week's Weather Extra. High dewpoints. We know how we feel when the air is laden with extra water. We feel sticky, uncomfortable, the air feels heavy...and sometimes it feels like we could swim to work. But what does the humidity do for our weather? First, a few things that you might not know about air and humidity. You might think that the air is heavier and feels more dense when it is humid out when in fact the exact opposite is true. The water molecule (many of which are present in Humid air) is really less dense (or lighter) than dry air. Here's why. Air is mostly made up of nitrogen and oxygen. Each molecule of nitrogen and oxygen contains two atoms of nitrogen and oxygen. For our example here we'll simplify and say that a molecule of nitrogen weighs 14 pounds and oxygen weighs 16 pounds. A molecule of water on the other hand contains two hydrogen and one oxygen. Hydrogen being the lightest element we know helps make water weigh much less than air. Continuing our example a molecule of water would weigh 10 pounds. Much lighter than both Nitrogen AND oxygen. Just like an ice cube in a glass of water, something that is less dense than its surroundings will rise. The same happens with humid air in the atmosphere. On warm days with high humidity, a little lift from some rising hot air, or a front can begin to push this moisture up into the sky. As the damp air rises into the sky it begins to expand and cool. And just like a cold drink outside on a humid day, the moisture begins to condense. Clouds form...and if a few other conditions are right. {Nats of thunder. Lightning and T-Storms} Even though there are many other factors in determining where and when thunderstorms and even severe thunderstorms may form. One of the most important ingredients is moisture. So the next time it is hot and humid out keep an eye to the sky and watch as the moisture rises and clouds form. Chances are that a little rain could be headed your way.
