Customer Reviews: An inconvenient falsehood August 31, 2007 2 out of 5 found this review helpful Yes, it is an "inconvenient truth" that we humans are having an effect on the environment, and that all other things being equal, the effect may be a significant global warming during this century. It is inconvenient because we'd rather not spend the effort to stop doing what we're doing and because we're not really sure how bad the problem is. But is it an inconvenient truth that we humans have committed some ultimate affront to nature, even worse than global warming, by permitting mere Jews to live in the Levant as emancipated human beings? George Jaeger does not ask this question, but the answer to it is no. And I think it is worth remembering that. In fact, it is a little silly to think that it is unnatural for a nation of a mere few million people to have as much as 11,000 square miles of land: most nations have far more land than this per capita. Jaeger is open about the fact that Carter's book has met with some serious criticism, mentioning reviews by Stein, Kinsley, and Dershowitz in particular. And he also quotes a New York advertisement which said "Peace Can't Be Built on a Foundation of Lies: Correct Carter's Falsehoods." I agree with that advertisement. On the other hand, Jaeger does say that "our consistently one-sided support of Israel has contributed to rage and terrorism" in the Muslim world. I think that is overstated. Yes, Israel is an American ally, but we also have given support to nations in the Muslim world. And we have not been entirely consistent in our support for Israel; we've never even managed to put our embassy to Israel in Israel's capital city. In addition, Jaeger accuses Israel of breaking key commitments and international agreements and colonizing Arab land, as if it were not merely not interested in peace but also not interested in little things such as survival and prosperity that depend upon peace. And he wonders if George W. Bush could "salvage his presidency" by, in effect, taking Carter's advice! Jaeger asks "Does Carter's cri de Coeur have a chance?" Well, anything a former US President asks for has a chance. But for the sake of human civilization, I sure hope it doesn't succeed.
