| Customer Reviews: Great book, fast paced, very entertaining March 10, 2010 T. Christolias (NJ) Book was very well written. I found myself interested from the moment I picked it up and didn't put it down until I finished it. I found myself guessing what's going to happen with Emilio's, Sara's, Pedro's, Julio's, and Dustin's every move. I would have never guessed it to end the way it did and I will not spoil it for anyone. GET THE BOOK!!
Couldn't put it down October 18, 2009 R. Bly (Dumont, NJ USA) Full disclosure: I met George Beck at a writing seminar and found him to be a talented and dedicated writer as well as a personable and ambitious young man. I loved Trounce, and everything the other reviews say is accurate. But in addition, as a pure suspense thriller, Trounce is impossible to put down. It starts on a high level of tension, action, and drama and doesn't slow one iota from beginning to end. It's what they call a real "page turner," and not only because of the action but because of the characters. The main characters are fully drawn and three dimensional, and the book is that much more suspensful because you care about what happens to them.
Thought-Provoking October 15, 2009 Reader Views (Austin, Texas) Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (7/09)
Living down next to the border of Mexico, I constantly see articles about the number of illegal aliens that are crossing the border to get into the United States. Sometimes they make it, sometimes they are captured and sometimes they die in the extreme elements. But in these reports, they are just listed as numbers, not as people. In "Trounce," George Beck tells a story about Emilio, a man from San Salvador who has illegally crossed into the United States with his friend Arturo.
Emilio is desperate to earn money to pay for cancer medications for his mother. He also still owes a steep fee to the coyote that took him across the border. When the coyote's van has a flat tire Emilio and Arturo strike out on their own across the Arizona desert. They need to make their way to Los Angeles to catch their next ride that will take them to New Jersey where they can find work. When they encounter the wrong man in the desert, tragedy strikes for Arturo. This is the first incident that teaches Emilio about how evil man can be.
Forced to go on by himself, Emilio encounters a youth named Pedro and a beautiful American woman named Sara. Circumstances soon get Emilio trapped in Sara's drama. When Emilio discovers that Sara is involved with a situation that could put the lives of thousands at stake, he has to figure out a way to stop the event from occurring without getting caught or killed. This is where the adventure really gets going.
Emilio and Sara have to learn to trust each other to stay alive. Even though they are from different cultures, in the end, they share the same hopes and dreams. They also learn to have courage. I really admired Emilio's character, because even though he was doing something illegal by coming into the United States, he still held on to his values. He and Sara both learned a lot about courage and facing their fears.
"George Beck has created an excellent suspense thriller novel with "Trounce." It truly kept me hanging on to the edge of my seat. Beck also developed a unique plot that in addition to entertaining you, it will also make you think more about the desperation that drives people to cross into our country. In doing this, it will lead to a lot of thought-provoking introspective questions. "Trounce" is justly a keeper.
A fast-paced suspense thriller September 21, 2009 Feathered Quill Book Reviews (Goshen, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Emilio is a man on a mission. Coming from a small village near San Salvador, El Salvador, he has illegally crossed into the United States to find work. It is urgent that he quickly earn money to send home to his ailing mother so that she may buy the medicine necessary to save her life. But Emilio finds more money, and more trouble, than he ever dreamed possible shortly after arriving in Phoenix, AZ.
Wandering around Phoenix, Emilio is befriended by 15-year-old Pedro, another illegal immigrant from El Salvador. While the two work a street corner washing windshields, Emilio spots "...a pair of sleek, gorgeous legs, skirt up to the thighs, that belonged to a beautiful gringa in dark sunglasses. She spotted me looking and smiled." That beautiful woman was Sara, a mysterious chemist who hires the two friends to move some furniture.
When a minor mishap for Pedro extends the duration of both men's stay at Sara's apartment, they are at first grateful. But that appreciation soon turns to fear when they realize that Sara is caught up in a plot with a cruel, vindictive terrorist by the name of Julio. This "brute with a ragged scar on his face" is an exiled member of the Mexican Frente Revolutionario who has hired Sara to make a canister of Sarin gas that he intends to use to kill thousands of people. As a witness to a dangerous and deadly transaction, Emilio is soon a target and on the run with Sara, falling in and out of love with the gorgeous, but trigger happy beauty.
Trounce is a novel that pulls the reader into its pages right from the start. The book opens with Emilio and his friend Arturo desperately searching for water after they were forced to flee a broken down van. Within the first few pages, Emilio is faced with a life-altering decision and the author doesn't slow down a bit, but rather continues his high-speed tempo throughout the book.
The characters in Trounce are far from perfect and each struggles with inner demons. Emilio, who feels he is a coward (and indeed is proven to be so in several scenes) is a surprisingly easy character with whom to identify as he struggles with his desire to help his mother while also sorting out his feelings for Sara. Will the two fall deeply in love or kill each other in their efforts to escape from Julio? The author has done an excellent job of weaving a story in which the reader truly cares about the future of the main characters.
Quill says: Trounce is a fast-paced suspense thriller with more twists and turns than a rowdy rollercoaster ride.
